미국 독립기념일인 7월 4일, 조 바이든 미부통령이 참석한 필라델피아 독립기념관 앞에서 미국독립 기념행사가 열렸다. 이날 행사에서 황준석 목사가 개회기도를 인도했다. 황 목사는 필라델피아 교협과 목사회 회장, 그리고 미주 남침례회 한인교회 총회장을 역임했다. 또 필라델피아 큰믿음제일침례교회 담임목사로 활발한 대사회적 활동을 벌여 왔다.

황준석 목사는 기도에서 미독립과 세계평화를 위한 희생자들을 추모하며 청교도 정신을 갖고 자유와 평등정신으로 나라의 독립정신의 가치를 회복하여 하나님께로 돌아갈 것을 간구하면서 다민족이 하나님의 은혜아래 하나로 뭉쳐 백성에 의한, 백성을 위한, 백성의 나라가 될 것을 간절히 기도했다.

이 날 특별히 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도를 마치자 참석자들이 큰 박수로 환호했고, 순서를 마치고 만나는 사람들마다 예수의 이름으로 미국을 위해 기도해 준 것에 대해 감동하며 인사했다. 요즘 공공행사에서 기도할 때 예수이름으로 기도하는 것을 대부분 기피하고 있는 현실에 대한 역반응이었다. 심지어 어떤 미국인은 편지까지 보내 예수이름으로 기도한 것에 대해 고맙다는 인사를 했다.

다음은 황준석 목사의 기도 내용이다.

Gracious Father,

We are a nation of many peoples. Yet, we are unified in our value for freedom. So we come together today seeking Your favor upon our nation that we may guard and exercise the freedom that You gave us.

We honor those who have fought so bravely in protecting this nation, and mourn with the families of those who have sacrificed their lives to make all that we have a reality. I pray that Your love and blessing be upon them abundantly.

Today We come here together seeking Your favor once again upon our nation and people. We desire to honor you, oh God. We desire for our nation to seek Your face and to turn to You. We desire that our leaders be obedient to You. We desire that our young people be blessed with Your presence in their lives.

So even as we celebrate this great day, the day of our nation’s independence, We desire to become dependent upon You. For as Your word says, that unless the Lord builds the house, the laborers labor in vain.

Therefore, May we not boast of our own ability or strength! May we not boast of our own wealth or wisdom! Oh God, may we not reject you! May we not ignore you!

Give us clean hands! Give us pure hearts!

In such, May you bless our nation and our people! May you return our nation and people back to you! May you be gracious to us, that the freedom you have granted to us may be put on display to all the world to see, for the glory of Your splendor!

We are thankful for the blessing that this nation is, a nation by the people, for the people, and of the people. We are thankful for the ethnic diversity of this country, yet still remaining one nation under God.
We are thankful for the godly heritage of our nation.

Now, “may everything that has breath praise the Lord.” In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen
