Do Not Worry about Tomorrow, but Focus on Today

Corrie ten Boom was a Dutch Christian woman who helped the Jewish people escape the Nazis during the Holocaust in World War II. She once said, “To worry is to carry the burdens of both today and tomorrow.” When I think about it, worrying is like living with the burdens of the future. We are considering things that have not yet happened as today’s burdens. But this kind of life makes it difficult for us to handle even today. When we worry about tomorrow, we get distracted and thereby cannot accomplish our work for today. As a result, today’s work gets delayed, which in turn ruins tomorrow as well. Therefore, we can see that worrying is an evil thing that ruins today as well as tomorrow.

Then how can we get rid of worries that constantly plague us and instead focus on today? When I was in seminary, I learned a way how to overcome worries. It was especially a very busy time during midterms and finals. At seminary, we took about seven courses each semester. But during exam weeks, we were tested on one or two courses every day. While I studied for the next day’s exam, I would think about how unprepared I was for the exam that I would have two days later. So, I would study for that exam instead. But then I would worry about tomorrow’s test, and so study for that again. As a result, I would find myself unable to completely prepare for either exam. So, finally, I decided to schedule my time and focus on one course at a time. When I did that, I was able to do well enough on the exams.

I also apply this method when I prepare sermons. As the senior pastor of a church, I preach several times during the week. And on special occasions, like during the early morning revival, I preach eight times a week. Preaching this many times can make me feel like I do not have enough time to prepare all the sermons. Thinking about a week’s worth of sermons as a whole makes it impossible to prepare any messages. So, I always focus today on what I would preach the next day. The amazing thing is, as a result, I am able to prepare and deliver each day’s message and lead the revival to the end.
This shows us that it is essential for us to not worry about tomorrow but focus on today. That is why Jesus said in Matthew 6:34, “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” This means, Jesus will give us new strength to deal with tomorrow; so, do not worry about tomorrow, but focus on today’s tasks that Jesus has entrusted to us. Therefore, I pray that we would be able to cast all our worries about tomorrow to Jesus and bear much fruit as we focus on today.
