“When I am weak, then I am strong”

In 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Paul confessed the following:
So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

According to this passage, Paul had a thorn in his body so that he would not become arrogant due to the precious gift that was given to him. Biblical scholars profess that the thorn in Paul’s body must refer to an eye problem. We can deduce that he must have had this sickness ever since He was blinded by a light on the road to Damascus when He met Jesus. He was in so much pain and discomfort due to his ailment that he prayed to God three times. As an evangelist, it must have been especially difficult for Paul to read books or write letters. And when he traveled around to share the good news, the discomfort in his eyes must have bothered him greatly. But God answered Paul’s prayer by saying, “My grace is sufficient for you”. This means that God had already given him the greatest grace, and thereby God’s will was to accomplish something strong in the midst of his weakness. When Paul was in pain, he had no choice but to humbly go before the Lord and desperately rely on God each day. As a result, God’s power was manifested through that kind of life. In other words, when Paul continued to completely depend on God in the midst of his hardships and share the good news, God’s power was shown, and people were transformed. Paul, who experienced this grace firsthand, lived out his confession, “Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses…”

Paul’s confession propels us to think differently about the meaning of our hardships. God’s will is to accomplish something mighty through our weaknesses as we humbly rely on God. Therefore, let us not get disappointed at our weaknesses when we face difficulties, but instead let us be able to boast about our weaknesses. I pray that you will be able to accomplish great, precious things as we seek the Lord and desperately rely on Him in the midst of our weaknesses.
