The Reason Honesty must be evident in a Christian’s Life

Beloved congregants of KPCB, I greet you in the Name of the Lord, who gives us what is better than what we could hope for.

James Dent of Charleston once shared this story:
Two fellows opened a butcher shop and prospered. Then an evangelist came to town, and one of the butchers was saved. He tried to persuade his partner to accept salvation also, but to no avail. “Why won’t you, Charlie?” asked the born-again fellow. “Listen, Lester,” the other butcher said. “If I get religion, too, who’s going to weigh the meat?”

This short account prompts us to think about several things.  When we consider the words of the one who did not accept the good news, we can deduce that there must have been a change in the born-again fellow’s behavior.  Initially, the two friends would put a thumb on the scale and trick the customers to pay more than they needed to.  However, ever since accepting Jesus as his savior, the born-again fellow would weigh the scales honestly.  The other man did not accept the Gospel because he thought that if he believes in Jesus like his friend, he would no longer be able to manipulate the scales and thus not make much profit through the business.  Another reason he did not accept the good news might be that he somehow already knew that he would have to live a life of integrity if he was to have a religion.  He knew that if he believed in a god, he would have to obey everything the god commands him to do.  And so he knew that if he believed in Jesus, he would have to live honestly.  Both or one of these reasons might be correct, but both are saying that someone believes in God must be honest.  We know this because we are innately aware that a higher being expects there to be no deceit in our lives but instead requires us to live a life of honesty.  And when we live this kind of life, we would be blessed.  The Holy Spirit, the living God Himself in spirit form, dwells within us.  The Holy Spirit is telling us today as to live with integrity.  And when we follow the Word and live an honest life, I believe that our live will be made smooth and our path prosperous.

Sometimes, honesty comes with a high price.  We might even have to deal with immediate losses.  However, in the long run, our choice to be honest will actually be accredited to us, and we will be able to live a prosperous life without any obstacles standing in our way.  As we know, the most important thing in America is credit.  When we pay off our credit card debts on time, we accrue good credit.  And with good credit, we can even loan large amounts from the bank or set up a large business.  Also, in any kind of interpersonal relationships, we gain good credit from others by gaining their trust, which enables us to do whatever we need to do.  I think it is the same with having good credit with God.  In 1 Samuel chapter 17, we see that David risked his life to protect the few sheep he had in his care.  He even fought with bears and lions in order to protect his small flock.  Later on, he became the king of Israel through God’s providence.   David was once a shepherd, who was considered to be on the last rung of the social ladder.  But by God’s grace, he became a king because, despite the fact that nobody was looking, he faithfully did his best before God who sees all things; and thereby, he was able to build his credit.  Beloved Church, let us strive to build good credit, not just with people, but with God.
