A Life of Holiness

R.C. Sproul, a renowned pastor and theologian, shared the following story in The Holiness of God:
A well-known professional golfer was playing in a tournament with President Gerald Ford, fellow pro Jack Nicklaus, and Billy Graham. After the round was over, one of the other pros on the tour asked, ‘Hey, what was it like playing with the President and Billy Graham?’ The pro said with disgust, ‘I don’t need Billy Graham stuffing religion down my throat!’ With that he headed for the practice tee. His friend followed, and after the golfer had pounded out his fury on a bucket of golf balls, he asked, ‘Was Billy a little rough on you out there?’ The pro sighed and said with embarrassment, ‘No, he didn’t even mention religion.’ Astonishingly, Billy Graham had said nothing about God, Jesus, or religion, yet the pro stomped away after the game accusing Billy of trying to ram religion down his throat.

Beloved church, the point of this story emphasizes that a Christian’s identity should be revealed through actions, not mere words.  This is especially true when the other person is aware that I am a believer.  I am not sure how Billy Graham acted when he played golf, but I assume he must have shown through his actions that he is a Christian. He must have shown that he is a Christian through his speech, conduct, sportsmanship, and attitude towards the game and fellow players.  This is probably why the pro golfer was overwhelmed by his mannerism.  Since Billy Graham was a pastor and not a pro golfer, I think he must not have played better than the pro golfer.  In cases like this, people would normally feel insecure and ashamed.  However, despite his amateur skills, I think Billy Graham tried his best at playing golf.  The pro golfer was the one who actually felt embarrassed when he saw Graham’s humble yet confident stance.

I think Billy Graham’s attitude teaches us Christians how we should live in this world as witnesses of Christ.  First, we need to acknowledge the truth of the other person’s ability.  Second, we need to acknowledge our own weakness(es).  Third, even though we are weak, we should live with confidence in Christ without feeling ashamed or insecure because Jesus has given different gifts to each of us.  Fourth, whether we are good at it or not, we should still do our very best in all that we are given to do, for it is written, “it is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Cor. 4:2).  When we live like this, we will be able to show those who are around us what it means to believe in Jesus.  And thereby, I believe they will not be able to forget the Christ in whom we trust.  So, let us be proud to be Christians and live each day in humility, yet with confidence, as children of God.  And I pray that we will try our best in all that we are given to do.
